About Jonathan
Jonathan Merel is the Founder and Managing Principal of Merel Family Law, a firm he established in 2009 after spending several years practicing at another Chicago family law firm. He focuses exclusively on family law and represents clients throughout divorce and family law proceedings, including settlement negotiations and courtroom litigation. His experience includes complex divorces involving multi-million-dollar marital estates, contested custody disputes, and other high-stakes family matters. He is admitted to practice law in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Throughout his career, Merel has developed a practice centered on strategic representation and clear communication with clients. He works to resolve disputes through negotiation when appropriate while remaining prepared to litigate when settlement is not a practical option. His approach emphasizes building strong attorney-client relationships based on compassion, sound legal strategy, and consistent communication. His experience with financially complex divorces and contested parental-responsibility matters has made these areas an important part of his practice.
Merel has also become a recognized voice on family law issues, with appearances on the Today show and coverage from publications including The Wall Street Journal, Business Insider, Yahoo! Finance, and Crain’s Chicago Business. Through Merel Family Law, he continues to guide individuals and families through divorce, custody, support, and other significant family law matters. His professional background combines negotiation experience, courtroom advocacy, and a client-focused approach to helping people navigate major family transitions.
