He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating cum laude from Butler University in 1985 before pursuing his legal education at Indiana University, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1989. Shortly after graduating, he served as a law clerk to Justice Richard M. Givan of the Indiana Supreme Court from 1990 to 1991.
