About Ben
Ben Shoptaw is an Indiana criminal defense attorney with experience on both sides of the courtroom. Before entering private practice, he served as a major felony prosecutor in the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, where he handled serious criminal cases involving drug offenses and firearms. Today, he uses that prosecutorial experience to defend individuals facing criminal charges and to anticipate the strategies prosecutors may use against them.
Ben began his legal career with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, gaining experience with matters before the Indiana Court of Appeals. He later worked in private practice handling complex litigation and collections before joining the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. His time as a felony prosecutor gave him substantial courtroom experience and a practical understanding of how criminal cases are investigated, evaluated, and prosecuted.
As a defense attorney, Ben represents clients throughout Indiana in a variety of criminal matters. His approach is built around careful preparation, clear communication, and understanding the facts behind each case before determining the best defense strategy. His experience as a former prosecutor allows him to look at a case from the perspective of both the defense and the State, helping him identify potential weaknesses in the prosecution’s position while preparing his clients for what to expect throughout the legal process.
